TEHRAN - A number of Iranian celebrities traveled to the port city of Bandar Abbas to honor the memory of those killed in a U.S. attack on Iran Air Flight 655 in 1988.

Rakhshan Bani Etemad, Mahtab Karamati, Ahmad Reza Darvish, Parviz Sheikh Tadi, Golali Babaei, and Habib Ahmad Zadeh were the six celebrities who made the trip, Khabaronline reported on Friday.

They said their presence at Bandar Abbas airport was meant to honor the national Iranian pride and pay homage to the 290 victims of the bitter tragedy.

The six also proposed launching a public campaign to tell the world about the story.

Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai. On July 3, 1988, the aircraft operating this route was shot down by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes.
